Following a special meeting of the USD 386 Madison/Virgil Board of Education Saturday morning, work is expected to begin next month to repair damage from severe storms that damaged Madison High School earlier this month.

According to Superintendent Tammy Baird, the board chose A-Lert Roof and Building Systems of Erie to handle the school’s gym roof replacement project. Baird says work should begin the week of September 18 to remove remnants of the original roof with the actual roof replacement beginning sometime in October.

Aside from physical education classes, which have been disrupted due to the damage, Baird says she does not anticipate the work to impact the school schedule any further.

The project is expected to cost between $320,000-$510,000 to complete with the district responsible for $25,000 and insurance covering the remainder. Baird says the exact price tag isn’t certain at the moment, however, she expects it to be closer to the $500,000 mark when all is said and done.

High winds from an August 5 storm system that blew through the area, peeled the west half of the roof off the existing roof and folded it on top of itself. The damage did not disrupt the start of the school year which began on time.

All indoor sports typically held in the main gym have been moved to the secondary gym until the roof replacement project is finished. Baird says there is no exact timeline for when the work will be complete, however, she is hopeful it is done by the end of the current semester.
